Excessive skin is something that can make many patients more complex, but fortunately, there are procedures that help them regain the firm appearance they used to have.

Let's talk about the Brachioplasty and the most frequently asked questions about this cosmetic surgery.

What is Brachioplasty?

This cosmetic and functional surgery improves the appearance of the arms by removing excess skin and fat between the armpit and elbow. In this procedure, that skin is relocated to give it a better, more toned and firm appearance.

Often, depending on the different factors that need to be evaluated, exercise is not enough to regain skin firmness in this area, since the skin is very thin and has little elasticity. There are several techniques to manage and improve the appearance of the arms, for cases where there is excess skin it is possible to make skin resections (cuts).

Who is a good candidate for brachioplasty?

Anyone with excess skin in this area is a good candidate. Generally, patients who have undergone bariatric surgery or have lost weight for other reasons are the ones who request this type of procedure the most.

The surgery involves a scar, the size of the scar depends on the amount of skin that needs to be removed.

What is post-surgery care?

It is important to maintain constant communication with the surgeon in charge to know what the postoperative period should be like. The disability after this surgery is approximately 10 days.

However, some general recommendations to keep in mind are:

• Avoid exercise for a while, especially if it requires a lot of arm movement. Any effort with the arms should also be avoided as much as possible for a few days while the scar heals completely.
• If possible, avoid raising your arms above your shoulder.
• Take all medications according to the medical formula.
• Do not smoke at least 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery
• You'll probably need to wear a compression band for the next few weeks after surgery.

Swelling and tenderness in the arms is normal after the procedure. But if you have any other symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, very red skin or fever, you should see your doctor immediately.
